The Knots We Knot (and others)

2021. film and two performances

Film
The Knots We Knot
16mm short film, 8 min
In collaboration with Adriana Vila Guevara

This 16 mm film piece is the result of research carried out during a residence in the Vall de Santa Creu. According to the artists “it is a translation of an encounter that thinks carefully. One that reads between the lines, looks into the eyes, listens to the rustle of the environment with attention. An applied sketch of becoming-one-with. A sketch, from the most mundane, of an encounter, physical, reflective, symbiotic and situated. A turning of pages as versions of stories that are contained in their simplicity, in their duration and continuation. A space-time to become what is suggested in each passage. An acceptance of the proposal of subjectivity, updating again and again the way in which one who is presented to us is received, updating each gesture and its pulse, in the weaving of string figures. Recognising the condition of walkers on selected intertwined paths".

From coexistence - between both artists and the environment - they create a film of direct yet poetic language, where the elements of the environment, well known in depth, reveal their condition of symbiosis; that is to say, they are shown as interrelated and interdependent, taking care of some elements of others. The images dialogue with fragments of the readings that the artists had previously shared in order to reflect on this symbiotic condition of beings.

Performance
The Knots We Knot
In collaboration with Adriana Vila Guevara

The action The Knots We Knot posses as an apparently simple, yet collectively demanding and somewhat risky, co-response-ability and kinship-generating practice. Moved and moving, paused and “resting”, this action seeks to articulate the game of string figures in an expanded and shared way, rendering visible certain connections between us, otherwise imperceptible.

It is an action that prompts us to apply some of the theories of Donna Haraway, Vinciane Despret, Ursula K Le Guin, Robin Wall Kimmerer, among others, in a basic exercise of situated inter-connectivities, affected and moved, of outstretched hands.

The artists asked the group of participants to walk halfway from the Valley to the mouth of the stream. They then tie all the participants together with a single rope, allowing a distance of one and a half metres between each one, creating a line in which all the members are connected. They are instructed to walk the path in silence, thus forcing the participants to communicate non-verbally in order to coordinate their pace or help one another negotiate any obstacles - as the route is not flat - and pause where necessary. They also offer an extra rope to each participant so that they are able to spontaneously attach themselves to other elements in the environment, such as trees, rocks or plants, if they wish.

On the way, the symbiosis is revealed by those evident knots that unite us all, our interdependent condition and the need for us to take care of our environment and beings within it; this becomes ostensible during the most complicated manoeuvres on the course, requiring slowing down or halting the group as a whole, demonstrating the considerate commitment of all the members of this assemblage. Any slight mishap or lack of concentration along the trail triggers a chain reaction that impacts everyone, evidencing this primordial connection.

Performance
A (Sort of) Critical Meditation on the Vineyard
In collaboration with Maria Marvila

This critical meditation is developed from a script configured by a mixture of voices, using different registers, to recount the history of the Vall de Santa Creu, both from the present and from memory.

Some fragments of the script:

"At the edge of the sea, where the Pyrenees come to die."

"Water always gushed from that fountain.”

"In the valley we went to pick olives, to harvest vines, to harvest grapes, to the orchard. Picking potatoes, we would go with the cart and the mule."

"Once this crop died out, due to the phylloxera plague, at the end of the 19th century, the frequent fires have prevented the recovery of the forests that had formerly given place names such as Selva de Mar or Cuello del Bosque."

This action was intended to be carried out entirely in the Clumet vineyard but, due to the disastrous fire that took place in the Sierra de Rodes in July, the artists decided to relocate the event to Plaça de la Font. The content was also affected: if at first they had planned to carry out a critical meditation on the commercialisation and perverted adaptation of oriental disciplines focused on meditation, such as mindfulness or coaching, they decided to focus on the need for healing in response to the trauma suffered through the valley fire.

The knots we knot / Los nudos que anudamos (trailer)
